Seth will be outlining OC Mike McCoy’s history of sub-standard RB play, while I will be focusing a little more strictly on McCoy’s questionable use of the entire RB room.First of all, it is very difficult to imagine that after 5 games, the Cardinals’ stud RB, David Johnson is not even averaging 50 yards per game on the ground. His rushing line is: 74/242/3.3/21/48.4. As Seth will graphically show you—-Johnson has been used almost exclusively as in inside the tackles runner. Defenses are loading the box Game Chandler Jones Jersey , calling full-scale LB run blitzes and appear to know exactly when McCoy calls a run—-typically on the majority of 1st downs and almost always on 2nd and 10.Equally troubling is how McCoy is under-utilizing Johnson in the passing game. There has been talk of moving Johnson around to throw to him off of motion and to line him up in the slot to take advantage of coverage mismatches. This type of creativity has been glaringly absent from the game plans to date. Johnson is only averaging 3 catches a game. The one time McCoy ran him on a corner route he scored a 30 yard TD. If you take away that one 30 yard reception, Johnson averages only 6.4 yards per catch in 14 receptions. For a player of his ability, that stat is alarming.The Cardinals #2 RB, rookie Chase Edmonds is only averaging 2.8 yards per carry on 14 rushes, for an average of 7.8 yards per game. In 9 receptions, Edmonds has 39 yards for a 4.3 yards per catch average. That average would have improved had Edmonds not dropped a 3rd down flat pass versus the 49ers that was wide open with only one defender trailing him from the side.To this point, Edmonds is an enigma. When Steve Keim drafted him Chandler Jones Womens Jersey , Keim said he likened Edmonds to a star NFL RB, but didn't say which one. If you notice—-one of the main reasons why this play was a home run—-it was because the Cardinals were using a FB to isolate on the ILB. That FB (Elijhaa Penny), who was arguably the best and most physical blocker in the pre-season, is now playing for the New York Giants, who poached him off of the Cardinals’ practice squad.Derrick Coleman, the FB whom the coaches kept, has been used sparingly—-but even on the few occasions he’s gotten into the game Chandler Jones Men Jersey , he’s been used more as a receiver than blocker. In addition, McCoy uses Coleman on reverse FB dives in 3rd and short situations (which is a good play).The Cardinals need a FB who is a blocker first and then a runner and receiver. Logan has been watching the last few games from the sidelines as one of the inactives. Apparently the coaches believe that Brandon Williams is a better kickoff returner than Logan, even though Logan finished as the 4th all-time leader in all-purpose yards at North Carolina (4,926 yards) and was 2nd in the NCAA in kickoff return average his senior year (with a 32.9 average).In his college career, Logan scored 28 TDs—- 5 TDs on kickoff returns,19 TDs rushing and 4 TDs receiving.

But when it comes to the Bucs, things are a bit different. There isn’t any other team in the league that plans to start off the season - barring injury - without their starting quarterback. Even Carson Wentz is looking like he’ll be ready to suit up on September 6th, after participating in team contact drills on Saturday and avoiding the PUP list during training camp.Winston’s suspension isn’t the only issue. If this team falls flat like they did in 2017 then you can bet that the entire staff, front office, and a lot of players will be looking for new homes next season. Several key areas of the team are in dire need of drastic improvement and if they don’t develop properly then it will be another long season. So where do the players find the inspiration and motivation to come out on top in 2018?It’s easy, within themselves and with each other. And that’s exactly what has shown up more consistently than any other theme so far in training camp - these players like each other and they want each other to succeed. We’ve seen the evidence from star players like Gerald McCoy lugging around pads and working with teammates after practice. We’ve seen it from Jameis Winston staying late after practice and working with the younger receivers. That doesn’t phase Barber, however, he looks at it as a positive. “I get the best of both worlds,” he told me after practice as we walked off the field. “I get a vet to teach me everything and I get a rookie who I can teach things. But at the same time, both of them are going to push me.”This team-first, work-together attitude was something that was missing last season. This became clear with players such as Chris Baker. After kicking him out of the Bay, it’s safe to say that this year’s crop of free agents have a much different thought process.“It’s been great. We just keep creating chemistry out there. Everybody pass rushes differently; everybody plays the run different,” new defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul said. “As veterans on the team, we’re teaching the young guys how to come up and how to do things correctly. Whatever the reason, it didn’t happen at the rate everyone thought it would in Jackson’s first year in Tampa.Still, entering 2018 there was really no doubt he’d be a part of the Buccaneers’ 2018 squad. For starters, one year is just not enough to give up on such a dynamic player. Plus, with Winston’s suspension to start the season, backup Ryan Fitzpatrick needed all the weapons he could get.Oh, and he carried $11M in dead money if the Bucs released him.In 2019, he carries zero dead money. And for the team to justify investing Top-5 roster assets to him again, is going to be a big sell. Apparently, for both sides.TEAM PRODUCTIONJackson’s 41 receptions placed him fourth on the team receptions list in 2018 behind fellow receivers Adam Humphries and Chris Godwin. His four touchdown receptions landed him sixth on the team with Cameron Brate and O.J. Howard finishing above the 32-year old in the category.Where he did lead the team was unsurprisingly in yards per reception. His 18.9 yards per average was solid Beau Allen Jersey , but when you consider it only out-measured Mike Evans by one-yard, it shows just a little bit of how disappointing this marriage between Jackson and the team has been. He was also the only wide receiver to have a rushing touchdown for the team in 2018.Jackson started the year with three touchdowns in two games. He finished with one in the final ten games he appeared in, and didn’t score another touchdown following his Week 8 touchdown in Cincinnati.In three full games with Fitzpatrick under center, Jackson averaged four catches for 104-yards and one touchdown per game. Starting with Chicago, Jackson’s averages dropped to two and a half catches, 46-yards and .2 touchdowns per game.Finally, he didn’t play at all in four of the team’s final five games, and many people came just short of accusing the eleven-year pro of mailing it in down the stretch.It’s not hard to understand why Jackson felt Fitzpatrick was the better quarterback for 2018. It was just hard to watch as he unraveled because it didn’t happen.In games that Fitzpatrick played in, Jackson averaged around four catches per game, 78-yards and scored four touchdowns.When Fitzpatrick didn’t play he averaged three catches per game but for only 40-yards on average and no touchdowns. What did go up was his frustration and questions about his effort. I still contest he and Winston were simply on a different page in his most notorious lack of effort accusation.LEAGUE PRODUCTIONAmong NFL receivers, Jackson finished outside of the Top-50 in catches. Players like Christian Kirk from Arizona, Philadelphia’s Alshon Jeffery and Julian Edelman of the Patriots had more receptions. Only Jeffery played one more game than Jackson in 2018. Edelman and Kirk each played 12.His cap number cost the Buccaneers more than those three players cost their teams, combined.As we know, when he did catch the ball, he did good things with it and he finished 32nd among NFL receivers with his 774-yards. Only Emmanuel Sanders from the Denver Broncos and Edelman had more yards playing in 12-games this past season.For yards per reception, he and Josh Gordon were the only two receivers to finish 2018 with an average above 18-yards per reception.So, when he touched the ball, good things happened. He just didn’t touch it very often.According to PFF’s receiver stats, Jackson was targeted deep (20-yards or more) on a larger percentage of his total targets than any other NFL receiver who had at least 70-targets in 2018. Of his 27 deep ball targets, he caught nine, which ranked him tied for eleventh in the with a host of other receivers. Guys like JuJu Smith-Schuster, Kenny Golladay, and Odell Beckham Jr. Guys who aren’t necessarily having their value questioned. The big difference between them and Jackson appears to be usage. Again, Jackson led the NFL in deep targets versus total targets with 37.5% of his targets being 20-yards deep or longer.Smith-Schuster and Beckham Jr. both had deep target percentages under 20% and Golladay came in at 20.9%. Yet all three had well over 100 total targets compared to Jacksons 72 Ryan Jensen Jersey , and only Golladay - a second-year player on the 20th ranked passing offense in the NFL - averaged close to the same amounts of targets per game as Jackson - the number two receiver on the most effective passing game in the league.CONCLUSIONOne could argue Jackson gave up on his team. There were times where it certainly appeared that way on the field, and on Instagram. However, looking at some of the usage numbers compared to the way other teams use receivers of similar talents, and maybe you can start to understand why he was so frustrated.Without stepping into the locker room, it’s hard to know exactly why his numbers became skewed in the way they did.No matter how you slice it, Jackson had more targets 20-yards or more downfield than he did 10-yards and less. For a receiver facing off coverage as much as Jackson does, those numbers shouldn’t be like that.Was it Winston? Was it Koetter? Was it Monken? We don’t know. I’d love to have Jackson on the Locked on Bucs podcast to discuss it - honestly and openly - but I don’t know that he feels there’s anything worth talking about.For now, we have the numbers and our perceptions.VERDICT: RIPPED OFFMatthew Emmons-USA TODAY SportsBut who ripped off whom?If ever there was a set of confusing stats, this is it. Jackson’s reception numbers were abysmal. But his yards per catch were amazing.His target numbers were terrible, but when he was targeted they were largely of the unlikely to complete variety. Tyreek Hill had the most catches of 20-yards or more with 20. In sixteen games, this means he had fewer than two per game. The rest of his production came from other streams.Even Hill wasn’t targeted deep as much as Jackson was on a per target scale, and the Chiefs were far more successful doing it with Mahomes and Hill than the Bucs ever were with Fitzpatrick or Winston and Jackson.We can say this. The Bucs got ripped off, but by who is the question. If you buy a Ferrari and can’t drive a stick, is it the cars fault?Is it possible DeSean Jackson got ripped off? Head coach Marvin Lewis fired defensive coordinator Teryl Austin on Monday and installed himself in the dual role of coach and coordinator.He also called his unemployed close friend to see if he was interested in returning for a third stint in Cincinnati as a special assistant on defense. Jackson was fired by the Browns two weeks earlier after winning three games in three seasons.Jackson was hoping the Bengals would reach out to him."This is a tremendous opportunity for me, and I'm just thankful that they said, ‘You come on home,'" Jackson said.So, now what?Lewis built his coaching reputation as a defensive coordinator, directing the Ravens defense that won the Super Bowl in the 2000 season. New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton thinks NFL teams are making a mistake if they’re only focusing on hiring the next trendy offensive mind as head coach.In an interview with the NFL Network, Payton said he concerned about several aspects of the recent head coach hiring processes around the NFL. Despite being one of the best offensive coaches in the NFL himself, Payton feels like the seeming determination of some to find the next offensive savant ready to become a head coach could lead to many mistakes in who teams hire to run their teams.“The thing that can be disappointing though is when you talk to someone and they give you the profile (of the coach) and then I’ll say ‘well you’re not interested in a young Bill Belichick or a young Tony Dungy?'” Payton said.“They get so pigeonholed into – cause this is cyclical, right, – and ultimately you would say if we did a little history, successful head coaches probably come from the east and the west and north and south. They probably come of both color and they probably come on defense and on offense. And they’re good leaders, they’re great leaders. And so if you say well I just want the one that coaches quarterbacks and they’re on offense Germaine Pratt Jersey 2019 , well then you’re going to end up with a smaller pool and you’ll probably have less of a chance to be right because already of eight hired there’s going to be three that survive three years.”There were eight head coaches hired this offseason by NFL teams. You can go draft 10 more running backs and be 0 for 10 trying to find him or (Sean) McVay.“And so I see a lot of mistakes made in that process I feel like this long in and so we’re excited to play those teams.”While Payton is absolutely correct to assert that top defensive coaches should not be overlooked as head coaching candidates, there have been a number of successful hires in recent years coming from the hot offensive coach. Doug Pederson (Philadelphia) and Matt Nagy (Chicago) parlayed success with the Chiefs into winning head coaching jobs. Frank Reich (Indianapolis) helped get the Colts back to the playoffs after winning a Super Bowl on Pederson’s staff. Kyle Shanahan (San Francisco) could easily make a leap in his third year if Jimmy Garoppolo can stay healthy. Plus, the hiring of McVay by the Rams was also a roaring success. But teams should absolutely be just as open to the next Belichick or Dungy as they are to the next McVay. If they’re only looking for McVay, they won’t find Belichick or Dungy.
