World Fly Fishing Championship Comes to Colorado

Post

The 36th FIPS Mouche World Fly Fishing Championship is coming to the United States with anglers from over 30 countries fishing the free flowing rivers and majestic lakes of Colorado this September 11-18, 2016.

Vail is the host town for the championship flag parade, opening and closing ceremonies, as well as the medal presentation. International attendees will enjoy a week of celebrations, including the town’s Oktoberfest event, and world class fly fishing in an alpine atmosphere.

Bring a camera and enjoy the beautiful scenery of Colorado and watch true masters of the fly rod in action. “An opportunity to participate alongside some of the world’s most elite fly fishermen is an experience no one should miss.” Ben Metcalf, senior staff. Competitors will fish the Eagle River, Colorado River, Blue River, Sylvan Lake, and Dillon Reservoir in Eagle and Summit Counties. Fishing venues are divided into 5 sectors where each angler fishes for 3 hours over 5 sessions.

Special community events are the Conservation Symposium and the Art Show. The Vail Marriott will host a collection of art in celebration of fly fishing on the final day of the championship. The Art Show and Reception will feature artist Derek DeYoung. All are welcome to come to the Marriott, visit with Derek and see his unique style of paintings during the Artist Reception. The 2016 Conservation Symposium, hosted by Colorado Trout Unlimited at Vail’s Ford Amphitheater, will provide a special day time screening of Patagonia’s Dam Nation film. This powerful film odyssey across America explores the change in our national attitude from pride in big dams as engineering wonders to the growing awareness that our own future is bound to the life and health of our rivers. Open to the public, the 52 minute film is followed by a Speakers Panel to discuss global watershed issues.

The medal ceremony will be held in Vail Village, team and individual medals are awarded while national anthems are played and nation’s flags are raised. Closing of the medal ceremony will include the passing of the ‘Sacred Scroll’ to the next host nation, Slovakia.

This championship is produced by The America Cup, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization promoting competitive and amateur fly fishing at the national and international levels and providing program support to Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing.
